    Our Criteria

Finding the best protein powders meant that each protein had to meet our strict standards.

    • Taste: Obviously you want a powder that tastes good and you’ll use it! We tested these powders mixed with non-dairy milks and in baked goods.
    • Protein Source: Not everyone can use the same protein sources based on food allergies, food sensitivities, and intolerances. The powders we are recommending are from a variety of sources that provide a variety of essential and non-essential amino acids. Some are complete proteins and others are partial. But they are all a variety so you can choose the best one for your needs.
    • Quality: In addition to being allergy friendly, we looked at those who are open with their sources for growing, those grown in good soil, powders that are non-GMO, certified fair trade, organic, kosher, and more.
    • Certifications: Those powders that are certified by 3rd-party testing is one of the best ways to ensure the quality of the product. We chose companies that offered certifications in things like organic, non-GMO, gluten-free, vegan, and heavy metals, among others.
    • Sweetener: Different protein powders use different sweeteners to make their drinks taste good. For people with allergies, a lot of times these sweeteners are a challenge. Many companies use things like stevia, which can be a problem for people with ragweed allergies, or monk fruit (lo han guo), which can be a problem for people with oral allergy syndrome. We prefer powder options that use cane sugar or not sweetened at all.
    • Price: We looked at both the price per pound and the price per serving.

Best Overall: Mary Ruth’s Organic Protein Powder

    • 14g protein per scoop (28g) / 15 servings per container
    • Price in 2023 $27.95 / $1.86 per serving
    • Contains: Pumpkin Seeds, Cane sugar, Xanthan gum
    • Free from: Stevia, Wheat/Gluten, Milk/Dairy, Eggs, Peanuts, Sunflower, Erythritol, Corn, Soy, Tree Nuts, Shellfish/Fish
    • Additional: USDA Organic, Non-GMO, Vegan, Fair trade,

This simple chocolate protein powder is our top pick for the all around best allergy friendly protein powder. With 9 essential amino acids it is a complete protein. Plus, it has 18 total amino acids, making this a macro hearty choice.

This protein powder is free from the top 14 allergies.

Fair trade sources are used for the chocolate.

Taste wise, this was the favorite out of all the protein powders. It blends really well into non-dairy milks and tastes great in baked goods like our chocolate protein pancakes and double chocolate protein muffins. Texture wise, in the soymilk it was a little bit grainy, but when added to baked goods, you couldn’t notice any texture change.

The only sad thing is that this protein powder is only available in chocolate.

Where to Purchase: Amazon, Mary Ruth’s

Best Top 14 Allergy Free: Naked Nutrition Organic Brown Rice Protein Powder

    • 25g protein per serving / 76 servings per container
    • Contains: Brown Rice
    • Free from: Wheat/Gluten, Dairy, Eggs, Soy, Peanut, Tree Nut, Corn, Stevia, Sunflower, Hemp
    • Additional: Non GMO, Organic, tested for heavy metals, no hexane used in protein extraction process, made with Southeast Asian grown rice, complete protein
    • Price in 2023: $74.99 for 5 lbs / $0.98 per serving

This is an amazing top 14 allergy free protein powder. I love that the serving is a whopping 25 grams of protein. On its own, the taste is rather bland, especially if mixed into just an unflavored dairy-free milk. However, this is perfect for mixing into recipes or adding to smoothies. With no artificial flavors or colors, this is a great overall protein powder.

The rice is sprouted, making for easier digestion for sensitive tummies.

It is safe for athletes to use as no banned substances are used in this protein powder.

From an allergy standpoint, the ingredients from the Naked Nutrition are processed in dedicated nut and soy free facilities. However, they are packaged on lines that run soy and nuts. They do not use gluten in any of their products, but do test for gluten to ensure their gluten free certifications.

On a final note, the containers that hold the protein powders from Naked Nutrition are always BPA free.

Where to Purchase: Amazon, Naked Nutrition

Best Whey Protein: Naked Nutrition Whey Protein Powder in Unflavored

    • 25g protein per serving / 76 servings per container (5lbs container, also available in 1lbs)
    • 5.9 g BCAAs
    • Contains: Milk
    • Free from: Wheat/Gluten, Soy, Eggs, Peanuts, Tree Nuts, Pea, Hemp, Sunflower, Coconut, Stevia
    • Additional: Grass fed cows, no growth hormones like rBGH or rBST, non-hydrolyzed protein, Non GMO, no hexane
    • Price in 2023: $94.99 for 5 lbs / $1.24 per serving

This whey based protein powder is fantastic if you are not working with a dairy allergy. The only ingredient is grass fed cow milk. The cows are not treated with growth hormones. Finally, the cows are all from farms in California or Idaho.

The non-hydrolyzed whey is made with a cold processing technique. After processing, more of the complete protein remains.

It is safe for athletes to use as no banned substances are used in this protein powder.

Taste wise, this does have a milky flavor which makes sense as it is made with milk. As it is unflavored it can be mixed with water, your choice of milk, used in baked goods, and used in shakes and smoothies.

Best Soy Based: Natural Nutra Organic Soy Protein Powder

    • 17g protein per 1 serving / 12 servings per container
    • Contains: Soy, Cane Sugar
    • Free from: Stevia, Wheat/Gluten, Milk/Dairy, Eggs, Peanuts, Sunflower, Erythritol, Corn
    • Additional: USDA Organic, Non GMO, Vegan, Certified Gluten Free, BCorp Certified, Fair Trade Certified, Kosher
    • Price in 2023 $40.95 for 14.4oz / $3.41 per serving

This sweet vanilla protein powder is soy based, making it a great option for those with dairy and nut allergies. As a soy based protein it has all the nine essential amino acids, making it a complete protein source. It has 3 simple ingredients: soy protein, cane sugar, and vanilla.

Taste wise this one was our second choice. The vanilla flavor is sweet but not overpowering. When mixed into soy milk, it was slightly chalky tasting and a little lumpy. When used in baked goods, this protein powder shined. From vanilla pancakes to protein blueberry muffins, this protein powder was fantastic leaving no weird aftertaste.

And as an aside, this company is helping the environment in that for every $10 spent, they will have a tree planted. Nice!

Where to Purchase: Amazon, Natural Nutra

Best Probiotic Based: Aloha Vanilla Protein Powder

    • 18g protein per 2 serving / 15 servings per container
    • MCT Oil from Coconut
    • Contains: Pea, Coconut, Hemp
    • Free from: Soy, Stevia, Wheat/Gluten, Milk/Dairy, Eggs, Peanuts, Sunflower, Erythritol, Corn
    • Additional: Sugar free, Non GMO, BCorp Certified, Fair Trade Certified, Organic, Kosher
    • Price in 2023 $32.99 for 1 lbs / $2.10 per serving

A sweet vanilla protein powder that keeps it sugar free and is free from most of the major allergens, this Aloha Vanilla Protein Powder is fantastic. This protein powder uses probiotics to keep it gut friendly.

One of the few blended protein powders that is not only fair trade certified but is also a B Corp doing good for the planet. It is also one of the few to not contain stevia or erythritol, which are important when you are dealing with ragweed or corn allergies.

Flavorwise, this is a nice smelling and tasty protein powder! Some people find that the cinnamon in this does overpower the vanilla, so if you are sensitive to cinnamon, this might not be the flavor for you.

This protein powder works great in baked goods with its vanilla flavor.

This company also makes a chocolate flavor!

From an allergy standpoint, this company produces the protein powder in a facility that also uses eggs, milk, peanuts, and soy.

    Where to Purchase: Amazon, Aloha

Best Budget: Naked Pea in Unflavored

    • Naked Pea in unflavored, chocolate, and vanilla
    • 27g protein per serving / 76 servings per container
    • Contains: Pea, Coconut (in chocolate and vanilla, not in unflavored)
    • Free from: Wheat/Gluten, Milk, Soy, Eggs, Peanuts, Tree Nuts, Hemp, Sunflower, Coconut, Stevia
    • Price in 2023: $57.99 for 5 lbs / $0.76 per serving

Made from yellow peas grown in the USA and Canada, it is free of artificial colors and flavors and no added sugars.

Something really cool about pea protein is that it is very heat stable. This means that when used in recipes for cooking and baking, more nutrients remain intact as opposed to other types of protein.

If you have a peanut allergy, it is best to use caution when consuming pea protein. Sometimes the body has a cross reaction from peas as they have a similar protein makeup to peanuts.

Flavorwise, it can be an acquired taste, especially the unflavored. I don’t know that I would recommend mixing it into a glass of plain (dairy free) milk and drinking it for taste. However, it does blend really well into baked goods and smoothies.

Where to Purchase: Amazon, Naked Nutrition

    FAQs

    Can children use protein powders?

Yes, children as young as 2 years old can use protein powders when incorporated into a healthy diet. In fact, for many kids with several allergies, it can be very beneficial to use protein powders to ensure kids are meeting their daily recommended nutrition.

Additionally, you want to make sure that you don’t overfeed protein to children. A good rule of thumb to determine how many grams of protein your kid needs every day, is to take their weight and divide by 2. Then, aim for that many grams of protein per day.

For example, if your toddler weighs 25 pounds, divide this by 2 to get 12.5. So 12 to 13 grams of protein per day is a good number.

Can I drink protein powder everyday?

Yes, you can incorporate a protein powder into your everyday diet as a component of your diet overall. Protein powders should never be a meal replacement, even when you are trying to lose weight.

Protein powders can be really helpful for people with several allergies to ensure that they are getting all their daily dietary requirements.

Can protein powders help me gain weight?

Yes, protein powders are a good way to boost nutrition and help people gain weight. Especially when combined with a weight gain shake, they help to give the body the nutrition it needs to build muscle.

Can protein powders help me lose weight?

Yes, protein powders can be used to help people lose weight when incorporated into a healthy method of eating. Protein is a complex macronutrient and the body does not readily store it on the body as fat. Plus, it helps to keep you full for a longer period of time. I especially like to use vegan protein powders for weight loss as they are also full of fiber. A diet full of fiber has been shown in several studies to help people lose weight and keep it off.
